Well Woman Exam Q & A

Why are well-woman exams important?

Annual well-woman exams create an opportunity for your doctor to establish a baseline of your general health. This baseline helps them diagnose health conditions early on, and can even reduce your risk of developing a serious condition by addressing potential concerns before they become an issue.

What does a well-woman exam involve?

During your well-woman exam, your doctor records your heart rate, weight, and blood pressure. They also review your personal and family medical histories to assess your risk of developing conditions like high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers.

In addition to these routine health screenings, well-woman exams address women’s issues like birth control, aging, and menopause. They also provide the specialized attention a woman’s unique anatomy requires, including screenings for:

  • Cervical cancer
  • Breast cancer
  • Osteoporosis

Based on your age, health, and family history, your doctor might recommend additional tests like Pap smears, mammograms, or colorectal cancer screenings.

The doctors at Austin Medical Group offer many of the same specialty health services as gynecologists so that you can streamline your wellness routine with a single visit to your primary care physician.

Well-woman exams at Austin Medical Group also ensure that your doctor has all of your health records in one place to provide a total whole-body perspective of your health.

Why do I need a Pap smear?

Preventive gynecological exams screen for abnormalities of the uterus and ovaries, sexually transmitted diseases, and cervical cancer through Pap smears.

During your pelvic exam, your doctor gently scrapes cells from your cervix to test for precancerous or cancerous cells.

The doctors at Austin Medical Group recommend annual Pap tests as part of your well-woman exam for women ages 21-65. Depending on your risks of cervical cancer and your cervical health, your doctor may adjust the frequency of your Pap testing.
